"Daybreakers" Movie Trailer Review

Michael and Peter Spierig (directors of the Australian zombie film "Undead") return to direct the vampire film "Daybreakers." If you like films about bloodsuckers, this is one to watch out for.

In the world of "Daybreakers," nearly everyone is a vampire. The undead population is facing a dire problem--humanity is going to go extinct. For them, that means their food supply is dwindling. Right now, they farm humans who are kept alive in a manner that reminds one of "The Matrix" or "Blade II." The vampires have two options--either create a blood substitute or somehow get the human race to flourish again. The trailer implies that if a vampire doesn’t get the blood it needs, it turns into a bat-like creature that seems to lack self-control. One of the vampires is approached (with crossbow in hand) by a small group of humans who want to bring their race back. One of them claims to have been a vampire, but has cured himself. So, what will the vampire society choose? Seek a blood substitute or a cure for vampirism?

The movie stars Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe and Sam Neill, all of whom are actors who can keep a movie going. Willem Dafoe stars as the man who used to be a vampire and there’s no doubt he’ll be able to do a role like that justice. The bat creature shown in the trailer looks vicious and very cool. Story wise, the film looks solid. It’s nice to see a movie depicting the vampires as the majority of the population while allowing them to retain their intelligence. It’s scheduled to release on January 8, 2010. It looks awesome and you should check it out.
