Robert Downey Jr. Hints at Retirement

Robert Downey Jr. will consider withdrawing from the film industry if his new detective comedy action-adventure film, "Sherlock Homles," flops.

Directed by Guy Ritchie and starring Jude Law and Rachel McAdams alongside Downey Jr., there has been a lot of pressure to make the film as endearing as the fictional character created by Arthur Conan Doyle over 100 years ago.

However, Downey Jr. has admitted that if he does retire, he would do a Jay-Z and withdraw for a few months and then return with a new project.

Downey Jr. stated, "I can only be a guy on a call sheet probably, I don't know, maybe a couple more times. It's something I'm so grateful to have in my palm, and yet I already see its inevitable decay...If 'Sherlock Holmes' performs well, I could be busy for the next 5 or 7 or 10 years. But we'd like to go ahead and suggest the Jay-Z model wherein one announces his retirement, soaks in all the requisite fanfare, and then behaves like it never happened. It's really the best of both worlds."

It sounds like Robert Downey Jr. isn't too confident about his upcoming movie. But this also may be a stunt to promote the film and get free publicity. If he is serious about this, maybe he'll also do a 50 Cent wherein he claims that he will retire if he doesn't achieve a goal he sets for himself (in Downey Jr.'s case have a blockbuster hit) and then after not meeting the goal, go on and make two more records and still not retire.

We can't have that Downey is awesome.
Holmes looks like a good movie and doesn't look too violent so it could do well with family outings to the theater.
