Noted character actor Stephen Root ("True Blood," "The West Wing") has joined the cast of "Cedar Rapids" and "The Conspirator," says The Hollywood Reporter.

According to the article: In Fox Searchlight's ensemble comedy "Rapids," Root plays the proud owner of an insurance company and boss of the film's lead, Ed Helms (“The Office"). Anne Heche and John C. Reilly also star, with Miguel Arteta directing.

In the Robert Redford directed "The Conspirator," Root plays a principal witness for the prosecution in the trail of a Confederate sympathizer who is tried as a conspirator in the Lincoln assassination. James McAvoy and Robin Wright also star in the film.

Though you may not recognize his name, Root has appeared in dozens of movies, including “No Country For Old Men,” and “Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story.” He also portrayed Milton, the mumbling, quirky, memorable character in Mike Judge’s cult film “Office Space.” He also has appeared on numerous television shows including “Seinfeld” and “Frasier.”

The addition of Root is a boost to both films. He is a strong dramatic actor, and he joins an already very talented cast on “The Conspirator,” but his role in “Rapids” may fit him even better. Root is known for his comedic roles, and joining with the always hilarious Helms, Root could help “Rapids” become a sleeper comedy hit when it’s released.

“The Conspirator” is set to be released sometime in 2010, while “Cedar Rapids” is slated to open in 2011.
