“Bitch Slap” Movie Trailer Review

Guns, car chases, and scantily clad women! Oh my! "Bitch Slap" is a shout-out to the great “B” movie exploitation films made popular during the early '50s through the '70s. In the film, three women set out to snatch $200 million worth of bling-bling from a cutthroat kingfish out in the dry lands.

Watching the movie's trailer, which is below, I failed to recognize any of the actors, so I went to the Internet Movie Database to do some digging. The three lead actresses--Julia Voth, Erin Cummings and America Olivo--don’t ring a bell, but eventually I come across some gems--Lucy Lawless, Renee O’ Connor, Micheal Hurst and Kevin Sorbo from “Xena: Warrior Princess” and “Hercules: The Legendary Journeys.” Man, do I miss the days when the insufferable CW was the WB, a safe haven for fantasy and science fiction television. I also spotted Minae Noji, a character on the soap opera “General Hospital” and Mark Lutz, who played the Groosalug in “Angel.”

"Bitch Slap" appears to be the first writing endeavor of co-writers Eric Gruendemann and Rick Jacobson.  Gruendemann produced such shows as “Jack of All Trades,” “Cleopatra 2525,” “Xena: Warrior Princess” and “Hercules: The Legendary Journeys.” Rick Jacobson, who directed some of the same shows Gruendemann produced (and others such as "La Femme Nikita" and “Baywatch”), also directed "Bitch Slap."

The trailer begins with a car coming to a stop in a desert. Exit several women as the camera pauses on their anatomy before capturing their faces. When an officer pulls up and asks the ladies how they got there, the red head pulls off her shades and explains that “it's quite a story.” Cue the fiery explosions, the gunfights and the sword slashing. Bring on the girl power, the girl fights, the girl-on-girl action. And why stop there?  Call out the ridiculous character names like “Black Ice,” “Kinki” and “Hot Pocket”!

For me, this movie could go in any direction. On the one hand, it looks as if it could be an entertaining, if not hilarious, B-movie. On the flip side, it seems as if it could turn out to be a Quentin Tarantino movie gone horribly wrong.

Catch the magic that is "Bitch Slap" at your local theater starting January 8, 2010.
