Music Video Review: Adam Lambert’s "For Your Entertainment"

Singer and "American Idol" alum Adam Lambert recently released his first official music video for his hit single "For Your Entertainment." The video is set in a dark, cavernous underground club that appears to have seen some serious partying--chairs are overturned and lampshades are askew, the scene dimly illuminated by low-hanging chandeliers. It’s clear that regardless of what happened at the club in the hours prior, the real party begins when Lambert walks in.

I particularly enjoyed the opening scene, featuring a fierce-looking, fabulously coiffed Lambert slinking down a narrow hallway flanked by a posse of menacing, leather-clad dancers. In his usual over-the-top fashion that his fans across the world have come to know and love, Lambert (adoringly referred to as ‘Glambert’ by his admirers) really pushes it to the limit in the video, particularly with the costuming--or lack thereof. Dancers writhe around Lambert wearing little other than heavy eye makeup (a subtle nod to Glambert himself, perhaps?) and S&M gear-- think nipple clamps, collars and chains, corsets and the like. While I loved the costuming, I think Lambert and his team really could have done without the snakes--it seems dated and all too reminiscent of Britney Spears’ "I’m A Slave 4 U" video.

My one concern about the video, however, is that while I was definitely entertained by it, I think the adult content makes it inappropriate for children to watch--the very same children who dutifully cheered Lambert on week after week during his stint on "American Idol." Overall, I’d say it is an excellent debut video but in the future perhaps Lambert and his team can come up with a way to appeal to the masses without sacrificing his trademark ferocity.
