"Leap Year"

Directed by Anand Tucker, written by Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont, 95 minutes, rated PG.

“Leap Year” is a romantic comedy and just by hearing the genre, you pretty much know what you’re going to get going into it. If you like the genre, you could very well enjoy the film, but it certainly doesn’t break new ground. It’s simply a lighthearted film that might be fun to watch on a rainy day, but ultimately, it's forgettable.

Amy Adams is Anna, a woman who makes apartments and houses look beautiful to entice buyers, and she is very successful at it. Anna has been with her boyfriend, Jeremy (Adam Scott), for four years. She thinks Jeremy is going to propose to her over dinner, but that prediction turns out to be wrong. He goes off on a business trip to Dublin, Ireland. After getting some unintentional inspiration from her father (John Lithgow, whose presence in the film is criminally small), she sets off to propose to Jeremy. As it turns out, there’s a tradition in Ireland where a woman may propose to her man on leap year.

Things end up going wrong when a storm hits and her plane has to divert elsewhere. She ends up in a tavern, where she is able to pay Declan (Matthew Goode) to drive her to Dublin so she is on time to propose. Things go from wrong to worse the moment Anna tries to make it to Dublin.

Anna and Declan are opposites--Anna thinks ahead, always trying to plan how things will go while Declan flies by the seat of his pants and just lets things happen.  So!  What are the chances that sparks will fly between Declan and Anna?

Both of the leads do well in their roles and the character of Declan is much more likable than Jeremy, who comes off as rather cold. Because of the two leads, the film isn’t a complete disaster. The problem with “Leap Year” is that it’s incredibly predictable. When one character does something, you usually know what comes next. Some of the attempts at humor aren’t all that funny and just leave you smacking your palm against your forehead.

There are some funny moments of note, such as the two old men arguing about what events are considered bad luck is amusing.  Still, these moments aren't enough to save the film. “Leap Year” is a bubble gum film--it tastes fine for a while, but it quickly becomes bland.

Grade: C-

This was a great movie! I loved the characters and the story line! My fiance even liked it! (which he is more about the action movies) This is such a cute movie for anyone to watch, it will make you fall in love again! Its just sad to know that people don’t enjoy a movie unless there is something slimy in it. I enjoyed it soooo much that I bought the DVD

This show was ABSOLUTELY GREAT, very entertaining, and a good story line. It was a very romantic movie. We loved it!! The critic who said this didn’t have much life breathed in it is nuts. It was oozing with life!! We watched in TWICE! Lots of chemistry, too. We highly recommend this movie, and in fact, it’s a breath of FRESH AIR.
