"The Buried Life"

By our guest blogger, Elisabeth Rentschler

What do you want to do before you die? It’s a simple question that people might ask themselves every day. But what if a stranger asked you? Would you know what to say? Well, you might want to start thinking about it.

“The Buried Life,” a new MTV series, is a story about Ben, Dave, Johnnie and Duncan. These four friends decided that they were fed up going through life without direction. So, they decided to make a list of 100 things they would like to do before they died. (Think of it as a riff on "The Bucket List.")  However, they also made a promise that for everything they did on their list, they would ask a stranger what they would like to accomplish. Before they leave town, they pledge to make that person’s wish come true as well.

The season premiere of “The Buried Life” starts out with the courageous bunch deciding to complete wish Number 6: Attend a party at the Playboy Mansion. This particular task begins with the guys scoping out the grounds to see what is in store for them. Come to find out, it’s going to be a lot harder to sneak in than they originally thought. The grounds are surrounded with cameras and even a double barbed wire fence. They soon realize they need a more solid plan than just trying to hop the fence.

The theme for this particular Playboy party is “Willy Wonka and Alice in Wonderland.” So, the group decides what better idea than to dress up as Oompa Loompas and hide inside a fake, life-sized cake. Two of the men will hide inside the cake, while the other two will dress up as Cristiano Ronaldo, the world famous soccer player, and his manager.

Now that the friends have the perfect plan in mind, it's time to help a complete stranger. The men stop a well-dressed man on the street and ask if they can ask him a question. Without hesitation, the gentleman satys, "Yes."  It's then that they ask their infamous question, “What do you want to do before you die?” It turns out they stopped a man named Mr. Wheeler, who was a 5th grade teacher at a local charter school. He said if he were given the chance to do anything, it would be to provide new equipment for his classroom. With that simple answer, the men thanked Mr. Wheeler, and continued on their way.

Through all the planning and six long hours of hiding inside of a cake, the Oompa Loompa’s are successful at making their way inside the party. The party was just as anyone could imagine, with hundreds of beautiful women in barely there clothing. Unfortunately for Cristiano and his manager, they were told to leave the property immediately. So, although only about half of the men were able to experience their wish, that wasn’t true for Mr. Wheeler and his 5th grade class. At the end of this season premiere, the four men surprised the class with a brand new iMac computer.

“The Buried Life” is a great combination of laughter and surprise. Not only is it entertaining to watch these four young men try to accomplish their life-long goals, but it is also heartwarming to see that they strive to help others as well. With the completion of this season premiere, it will be interesting to see what other crazy shenanigans these guys pull. Yet more importantly, I can’t wait to see them change the lives of others. So, if you see a big purple bus pull up in front of you on the street, be prepared to answer a question.
