"Dead Snow"

By our guest blogger, Jeremy Wilkinson

"Dead Snow" is a Norwegian horror/comedy involving a cabin in the mountains and zombie Nazis. It's certainly an intriguing premise, but premise alone cannot keep a film from tanking. Does "Dead Snow" deliver laughs and scares? Or does it fall flat on its face?

Seven med students drive up to the mountains, looking forward to a nice, relaxing vacation. They get to the cabin where they will be staying and await the arrival of an eighth friend (who is skiing across the mountains). During the first night, a mysterious man shows up at the cabin. After chastising the young students, he relates a tale about a Nazi occupation in a nearby town and how the locals eventually chased the fascists up into the mountains.

According to the story, the townsfolk assumed the Nazis froze to death. The mysterious man then warns the students of a great evil, then sets off into the night. The students scoff at the story, but when one of the vacationers goes missing, they begin to think the man might have been telling the truth. Could it be that the Nazis have risen from the dead as flesh-hungry zombies?

Yes.

If you're looking for a deep plot with rich characterization, watch something else.  "Dead Snow" does not have much of a plot. The thread-bare plot mostly serves as a means to get these people in an isolated area so they may be attacked by the undead. While the characters are likable, they are flat--you're given just enough information to care about them.

But this is not necessarily a bad thing. At least, not for this movie. "Dead Snow" keeps tongue firmly planted in cheek, never taking itself too seriously. Not all of the jokes work, but there are moments of genuine humor throughout the film. Horror fans will notice multiple allusions to other films, whether it's through editing or character dialogue. In addition, this movie does not skimp on the gore or blood. Some of the death scenes are pretty graphic and there's one scene that creatively uses a man's intestines.

One of the problems with the film is how the zombies are used. The SS uniforms bring about an interesting aesthetic, but other than that, the whole "zombie Nazi" premise is underutilized. The zombies could be running around as cowboys or astronauts, and it wouldn't effect the movie too much. It's not a huge problem for the movie, but a viewer might be expecting something more than what's given.

This is not the next great horror/comedy, but it is entertaining if you like horror films. Put it in the Netflix queue, grab some fellow horror fans, and enjoy the following 90 or so minutes.

Grade: B-
