“The Losers” Movie Trailer Review

“The Losers” is an upcoming film based on the comic book series released by the Vertigo imprint of DC Comics. The comic ran from 2003-2006 and was highly successful. Naturally, as with any other comic book ever published, a film adaptation must be made.

The Losers are a misfit group of quazi-C.I.A. agents who are betrayed by their leader, Max (Jason Patric). They are left for dead following one of their missions. The Losers vow to get revenge and are eager to wage war on their betrayers. Some of the big name Losers include: Aisha (Zoe Saldana), Clay (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), Jensen (Chris Evans), and Pooch (Columbus Short).

The whole premise seems a bit familiar, but the trailer does have its moments where it seems as if “The Losers” could really stand out. The cast seems solid, and the dialogue in the trailer is pretty funny. Pooch’s line about being the “black MacGyver” is priceless. The action looks a bit hokie, but that could work in a film like this.

My only gripe with the trailer is the scene in which Chris Evans’ character is surrounded by enemies and he holds up his fingers in the shape of a gun. He then shoots his fake finger gun and the enemies get shot with real bullets. Didn’t that exact scene happen in “Crank”?

The trailer is slightly reminiscent of “Smokin’ Aces” or “Shoot ‘Em Up," both of which I enjoyed thoroughly, but were critically panned. The film seems more about style over substance, which is fine if done right. There have been too many Tarantino hacks releasing uber-violent, unsophisticated films in the past decade. Will “The Losers” have enough originality and flair to distance itself? Check it out when it hits theaters on April 9.
