Music Video Review: Debi Nova's “Drummer Boy”

Debi Nova wants to be Shakira. She dances like her, has the same type of Latin flair and even sings in the same style. Her latest video, “Drummer Boy,” features Nova dancing and shaking her little heart out a la Shakira’s “Whenever Wherever.”

Off in a tropical hideaway, Nova belts out her lyrics about the drummer boy while she shimmies under a rustic beach bungalow. The set looks as though it could have been left over from a tropical swimsuit shoot. The landscapes that surround Nova are breathtaking, but it isn’t enough to deter viewers from the fact that there really is nothing going on in the video. Occasionally people join her, at one point she actually is surrounded by drummer boys, but mainly the video consists entirely of Nova and her ability to dance in different swimsuits.

The song itself isn’t bad. She has great pipes and the tune is infectious enough to make listeners want to hit the beach or the club. This type song is sure to take off as the weather gets warmer--it just has that summertime feel about it. Nova may not be the most original talent out there, but she does know how to sing and that gives her an advantage. Like the pop stars that have come before her, Nova will have to find her own voice and step out of Shakira’s shadow to truly prove what she can do.
