Leona Lewis' "I Got You"

By our guest blogger, Megan O'Malley

Leona Lewis is a bona fide star, with a hit song from “Avatar” and a new album out, she can pretty much go anywhere. Her latest single, “I Got You,” is a heart-wrenching piece in the same vein of Christina Aguilera--with a video to match.

“I Got You” sees Lewis taking herself out of the action of the video. The video is not about her--she’s merely an omnipotent narrator. Instead, there are couples in various stages of fighting and breaking up. There are hints of violence and anger in these relationships--all the while, Lewis is singing and giving voice to the lost souls of the video. As the video reaches its climax, the viewers witness the anger and loneliness that comes with the end of a relationship. “I Got You” speaks to all those who have ever been in love and had it not work out.

With her voice, Lewis really gets to the heart of the song and listeners can hear the emotion in her singing. This isn’t some sassy come-hither single--she hits on emotions much deeper than that and it pays off in “I Got You.” Lewis has voice that can hold up to a song like this, where other singers might falter on the notes in which Lewis shines. The way Lewis brings pain and hopefulness to both the song and video for “I Got You” makes it worth watching.

Grade: B+
