Sony Pictures Classics to Distribute “Animal Kingdom”
Cinema Blend is reporting that Sundance favorite “Animal Kingdom” has been purchased by Sony Pictures Classics--no release date has yet been announced.
The Australian film, starring Guy Pearce, Ben Mendelsohn and Joel Edgerton, was universally praised when it made its festival debut, and ended up netting a Jury Prize. It follows Joshua (newcomer James Frecheville) as he tries to navigate his way through life as part of a desperate and dysfunctional family of criminals. When his crazy uncles hatch a plan to get back at the cops, Joshua is approached by Pearce’s character, a policeman who tries to convince Joshua to rat out his family in exchange for his own protection.
Having already been compared to the “Godfather” series, “Animal Kingdom” is garnering serious praise for its director, David Michod. Hopefully, now that it has an American distributor, those who didn’t make it to Sundance will soon be able to judge for themselves.
