“The Last Song”

Based on the novel by best-selling novelist Nicholas Sparks (“A Walk to Remember,” “The Notebook”), “The Last Song” is the tender story of family, first loves and an estranged father’s second chance to reconnect with his children through the one thing they have in common--music. From director Julie Ann Robinson, the film stars Greg Kinnear, Kelly Preston, Miley Cyrus, Bobby Coleman, and Liam Hemsworth.

Set in a small Southern beach town, “The Last Song” chronicles the journey of seventeen-year-old Veronica ‘Ronnie’ Miller (Cyrus) whose life was altered dramatically after her parents divorced and her father moved away from their home in New York City to Tybee, Georgia. Now, three years later, Ronnie is still angry and continues to alienate herself from her parents, especially her father, a former concert pianist and teacher. Ronnie’s mother, however, decides that it would do everyone in the family good if Ronnie and her brother went and spent the summer with their father. In the ensuing events, which involve Ronnie’s first taste of romantic love and the growth of her reluctant relationship with her father over their mutual love of music, “The Last Song” unveils the myriad of forms that love can take.

The trailer opens with Steve Miller (Kinnear) composing a heartfelt letter to his daughter Ronnie that pretty much sums up the entire film--difficult divorce, summer together, let’s reconnect, big, teary-eyed hugs and kisses. In the next clip, a sulky-faced Ronnie arrives on scene at her father’s beach house looking none-too pleased. Although, soon thereafter, her frown is turned upside-down when she is introduced to a tall, blond drink of southern water (Hemsworth). From there, the walls of angry teen Jericho start to come tumbling down as Ronnie begins warming up to the idea of having a real relationship with her father.

In the trailer, Preston is tender and sincere as Ronnie’s mother, Kim, and Kinnear is ever-charming as dear-old dad. Cyrus, however, remains pouty and tight-lipped in most of her trailer scenes, so it is difficult to gather whether or not she has stepped up her game from “Hannah Montana” to demonstrate any real acting ability. Based on the trailer, it appears that the show-stealer of “The Last Song” is going to be 12-year-old Bobby Coleman, who puts forth an endearing performance as Ronnie’s younger brother, Jonah.
