She & Him's "In the Sun"

By our guest blogger, Joel Crabtree

In She & Him's latest video, "In the Sun," M. Ward redefines the high-school bad boy. The Fonz? Christian Slater's J.D. in "Heathers"? Please. I'll take M. Ward over them any day.

Walking through the halls with his dark shades and too-cool-for-school attitude, Ward is followed by a vibrant Zooey Deschanel — the She to his Him.

Deschanel moves through the hallways, classrooms, library and gymnasium with a spirited troupe dancing along with her. Watching Deschanel, it's hard not to be reminded of "(500) Days of Summer," where her co-star Joseph Gorden Leavitt was the center of an extravagant dance scene to Hall & Oates' classic "You Make My Dreams Come True."

Director Peyton Reed's video for "In the Sun" complements She & Him's soulful yet playful style. Reed, most known for his films "Bring it On" and "Yes Man" (the latter of which stars Deschanel), was the perfect choice for the video. Even his use of red — lockers, doors and outfits — matches the band's "Volume 2" album cover, which is in stores now. Reed's use of colors really makes the video pop, as well.

The video is as much a joy to watch as the song is to listen to. "In the Sun" leads up to a guitar solo finale from M. Ward that is so cool it would make Milo Ventimiglia's Jess from "Gilmore Girls" pee his pants. Ayyy, how's that for a high-school bad boy.

Grade: A
