If we’ve learned anything about Lady Gaga since she arrived on the scene and catapulted to the top of the charts, it’s that she does nothing by half-measures. From her outrageous avant-garde ensembles to her penchant for crazy coiffures, Gaga always manages to keep her fans buzzing. It’s no surprise, then, that her latest video for her hit single, "Telephone," is a whopping nine minutes long in its entirety and brimming with her trademark eccentricity.
"Telephone" has a rather unusual setting--a women’s penitentiary. Gaga is possibly the only inmate in history to make prison stripes look glam. As she strolls down the hallway, flanked by two burly female security guards, she sashays to her cell like a model stomping down the runway. Before the music even starts, she pokes fun at herself by squashing the hermaphrodite rumors that have surrounded her in recent months and reminds us of her bisexual tendencies when she shares a kiss with a menacing fellow inmate in the prison yard.
Things really heat up when Gaga gets a phone call from none other than Beyonce. After an impromptu smoldering dance sequence with her scantily-clad inmates, Gaga is a free woman--Beyonce arrives at the prison in a serious getaway car. Together the two embark on a mission to wreak havoc through the desert. The duo’s thick-as-thieves attitude is vaguely reminiscent of Thelma and Louise, if Thelma and Louise were into studded bikinis, seriously intense eyeliner, McQueen heels and committing mass homicides.
Lady Gaga has never been afraid to push the envelope and ruffle some feathers, so to speak, but "Telephone" definitely is not for the faint of heart. In stands in stark contrast to the grotesquely beautiful video for ‘Bad Romance’ and the strangely compelling ‘Paparazzi’ video--"Telephone" is on an entirely different plane, with the costuming (or lack thereof) and the unexpected setting and the bizarre storyline going where virtually no female artist has gone before. The feedback on the video has reached a fever pitch, but whether you adore it or abhor it, it’s undeniably worth seeing.
