Matt Damon Set To Woo Tina Fey On “30 Rock”

By our guest blogger, Alexandra Cervenak

For someone who claims her life, especially her love life, is a mess, Tina Fey’s “30 Rock” character Liz Lemon sure gets to hook up with a lot of handsome gentlemen – James Franco, Jason Sudekis, Cheyenne Jackson, even Jon Hamm (consider me extremely jealous about that last one). And now Liz Lemon has landed herself a bona fide A-list movie star in the form of Jason Bourne himself, Matt Damon, who is set to guest star on the sitcom later this spring.

Back in December, "Entertainment Weekly" informed Damon at the premiere of his latest film “Invictus” that Fey would love to have him for a guest starring stint on her show, and Damon responded enthusiastically that “I would do [“30 Rock”] in a heartbeat if they asked me to come on.” Apparently, even though Fey had expressed an interest in Damon, she hadn’t told him (or his people) about it, as the actor stated “I have not been approached about doing it. She should call my people--or even better me. Or I could call her. Let’s make this happen.”

And it was announced this week that Damon’s appearance will indeed be happening, most likely during one of the last “30 Rock” episodes of the season. As of now, details on his appearance are shaky, but it seems that he will be playing another love interest for the bespectacled Liz Lemon. NBC is hoping to have Damon on board for several episodes, but since he is also shooting a movie around the same time that may be a difficult order to fill. But Damon is such a big fan of the series (“My wife and I download that show in bulk” he says) that he is willing to appear in more than one episode, should his busy spring schedule allow it.

Considering that Fey’s Liz Lemon is hilariously socially inept, it’s sort of ridiculous that she continues to score men most women can only dream about, but then again, realism isn’t exactly the calling card of “30 Rock.” But I am willing to ride with this latest development, mainly because “30 Rock” has such a steady stream of guest stars that no single one exactly seems like stunt casting. While other shows might not be able to get away with such a shtick, thanks to the fact that “30 Rock” revolves around a sketch comedy show, the parade of guests stars feels akin to the parade of celebrities that act as hosts each week on Fey’s former television home, “Saturday Night Live.”

Of course, some of the series’ guest stars have been more successful than others – Hamm’s handsome but dim-witted doctor brought the laughs, but Julianne Moore’s recent attempt at a Boston accent ended up more annoying than funny. But Damon has proved in films such as the “The Informant!” that he has comedic chops, and he seems to be a good sport, having appeared in Sarah Silverman’s now infamous “I’m F*cking Matt Damon” video. So all in all it should be a good time--if Damon’s game, I am too.

While the exact date of Damon’s guest stint is unknown, you can still watch “30 Rock” at its regular time on Thursday nights, 9:30 pm on NBC.
