Movie Trailer Review

"The Other Guys"

By our guest blogger, Joel Crabtree

A great comedic duo often has the ability to make a movie worthwhile. When the material seems stale or a few gags fall flat, a sharp twosome can save a picture. Adam McKay's "The Other Guys" happens to have two such team-ups.

Dwayne Johnson and Samuel L. Jackson play bad-ass cops who everyone envies, while Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg play the title characters — "The Other Guys." Working as pencil pushers with the NYPD, detectives Terry Hoitz and Allen Gamble (Wahlberg and Ferrell, respectively) get their big break, only to have it go terribly wrong.

What exactly is there big break and how does it go terribly wrong? It's not at all clear in the trailer. But does it really matter? Not one bit.

Jackson and Johnson are almost cast too well, playing right into type as a couple of trumped up Axel Foleys. It's almost as though they're in a different movie altogether — one straight out of 1984.

Will Ferrell, whose comedy is often hit-or-miss, looks to successfully create another one of his outlandish goofballs under the direction of McKay — the kind of character people like, not "Semi-Pro's" Jackie Moon. Ferrell hits his stride in "The Other Guys" with a botched bout of good cop/bad cop.

But what's really going to draw audiences in is Wahlberg playing a hotheaded detective who enjoys dancing. As he shouts, "I'm a peacock--you gotta let me fly" (the trailer's best line), you realize just how much comedic potential he has. His performance alone will be worth the price of admission.

"The Other Guys" hits theaters Aug. 6, 2010.
