"Survival of the Dead" Movie Trailer Review
"Survival of the Dead"
By our guest blogger, Joel Crabtree
Decades before zombie movies became trendy in Hollywood, George A. Romero was toiling away at revolutionizing horror films. Romero couldn't just slap "with Zombies" at the end of a Jane Austen title and call it a day. The director got his hands dirty, independently making "Night of the Living Dead" in 1968--and changing the genre forever.
To call Romero a master of horror would be an understatement. He's a brilliant filmmaker, and one who is never afraid to inject his political beliefs into his often gory art. Surely his latest movie, "Survival of the Dead," will be no exception.
The sixth installment in Romero's series, "Survival" takes place shortly after the events of "Diary of the Dead." A small group of soldiers is brought to Plum Island, where they enter into a power struggle between the island's two dominant families. One family believes in keeping the undead alive in case a cure is found, the other has a shoot-to-kill policy.
Using the island at odds, Romero looks to continue focusing primarily on the tension between humans while keeping the ever-present undead firmly planted in the story. Of course, both families are doing what they believe is best for the human race, creating a moral gray area that thoughtful filmmakers such as Romero thrive on.
The trailer (which happens to be an R-rated red band trailer) gives audiences a glimpse of the amped-up and absurd violence featured in "Survival." After more than 40 years, it's good to see a director who can still get creative and have fun with his subject matter.
"Survival of the Dead" will be available on VOD Amazon, Xbox Live and PlayStation on April 30. The film hits theaters May 28.
