"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows"

Movie Trailer Review

By our guest blogger, Rob Stammitti

Fans of the "Harry Potter" series have been waiting a long time for this one. "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" is the culmination of all that has come before it, the final great struggle between good and evil that determines the fate of its characters and the world as a whole. The novel itself was the most dense and powerful of the series, so thankfully the filmmakers seem to be respecting that with the adaptation, which is split into two parts so as to give the material the room to breathe it really needs.

So, after a few months of waiting, the full theatrical trailer is here, and it's a doozy. Equal parts haunting and insanely epic, it gives us just brief glimpses of the myriad of adventures the film takes its characters on. Fans will notice some big things--the journey through Gringotts, the battle at Hogwarts, and of course the confrontation between Harry and his nemesis, Voldemort--which events take place in which part I couldn't say, though obviously those involving the final battle will be in the second. I find it odd they chose to show so much of it in the trailer, but that does seem to be the technique in trailers lately.

Less is never more.

Still, there's no way the trailer couldn't leave fans satisfied. Other than the big action moments, there's a lot of solid character stuff as well, and we get quick shots of many of the various bit players. But the film is about Harry, Ron and Hermione (Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson) above all else, and based on the trailer, it appears as if they've stayed true to that. It's very much about their journey, and the huge sweeping shots of countrysides and forests definitely suggests it'll be as epic in scope as it was in the book.

Really, aside from a couple cheesy orchestral swoons when the title finally pops up on screen, the trailer is about the best you can get. It's exhilarating to see the first great glimpses of the end of something that has been around for so long.

The first part of "Deathly Hallows" arrives November 19, 2010, followed by the second part on July 15, 2011. Trailer is below. Thoughts?
