"Vampires Suck"

Movie Trailer Review

By our guest blogger, Jeremy Wilkinson

"Vampires Suck" is the perfect title for a movie made by Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer--it's a tired pun we've all heard before but is inexplicably intended to be funny. In case you don't know, Friedberg and Seltzer are the minds behind multiple woefully inept spoof movies that have come out in recent years. 'Date Movie,' 'Epic Movie,' 'Meet The Spartans,' and 'Disaster Movie' are all products of their attack on comedy. It's surprising they haven't made 'Spoof Movie' yet.

The "Twilight" franchise is certainly ripe for satire--shallow characters, plodding narrative and an unintentionally awkward romance are just some of the elements that are practically begging to be mocked on screen. It was inevitable that the series would be parodied, so it comes as no surprise that Friedberg and Seltzer are attempting to do just that.

Does their latest film do anything to raise the bar they have managed to keep so low?

"A little, I guess" is probably the best way to answer that question. The very beginning of the trailer is made up of jokes you've come to expect from the team behind these films. It is not particularly funny and either caters to cheap humor or pop-culture references that aren't really jokes. For example, the cast of "Jersey Shore" is included. The scene we are shown of them cannot be construed as "comedy" by any stretch of the imagination and comes off as the creators saying "Get it! 'Jersey Shore' exists!"

One "joke" actually stopped this reviewer dead in his tracks. Watch the trailer at about 1:20. A blond vampire leaps at "Edward," who hits the attacker with a bat. It may look familiar to you because that same joke is also in "Scary Movie 2." Not a similar joke, mind you. It is practically identical.

Probably the most confusing part in the trailer happens at around 1:30. One of the evil vampires asks: "Why does everyone think we're the Black-Eyed Peas?" It's probably meant to be a joke, but actually comes off as a legitimate question. Baffling.

It's not all bad, though. The few jokes that directly reference the source material are a little funny, and are much better than anything else in the trailer.

Overall, it looks like it could be similar to "Scary Movie 3." Parts could be funny, but the parts that are not stand out so much that it's hard to enjoy it completely.

"Vampires Suck" could be the best film Friedberg and Seltzer have made together. Small glimpses of hope that the filmmakers have learned their lessons are given. Sadly though, it comes across like a long time drug addict who swears for the seventh time he's going to finally going to be sober. Somehow, you just don't believe him.

I agree. Have the cast of MadTv learned their lessons as well?
