Chromeo's "Don’t Turn The Lights On"

Music Video Review

By our guest blogger, Gabrielle Corrado

I’ll come right out and say it—I love Chromeo. Adore them, in fact, so it should come as no surprise that I love their video for their recently released single "Don’t Turn The Lights On." And I’m not alone. The Canadian duo sticks to what works for them--funky dancepop with witty, can’t-get-them-out-of-your-head lyrics.

The song has been remixed to death, but in my opinion, the original version, featured in the video, is superior. The video itself is pretty basic but still manages to be interesting. It starts out with P Thugg and Dave jamming out in a suburban house with electrical problems—fittingly, the lights keep turning off, leaving only the duo’s shining eyeballs visible. Sounds strange, but the effect is oddly compelling. Then, they are joined by a group of hipster revelers and an impromptu house party takes place. The focus of the video is less about the faces of the partygoers and more about how each of them looks in the dark. Shortly thereafter, P and Dave seek solace somewhere more quiet and take their keyboard and guitar to what appears to be an empty the public library.

The breakout star of video? Dave’s big brown eyeballs, which temporarily emancipate themselves from Dave for a night out on the town. The eyeballs stop at the movie theater, peek up a woman’s dress, spy on a showering neighbor and eventually return home to Dave.

The video is admittedly bizarre, but it works for the duo. It’s part hipster, part horrifying, but entirely Chromeo, and I applaud them for staying true to their identity. I, along with legions of Chromettes, look forward to their next video.

The video is below. What are your thoughts?
