It seems that the internet has empowered 50 Cent to express blatant homophobia. Oh, the wonders of the typed word.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, after celebrity blogger Perez Hilton insulted the rapper, 50 Cent took to the Internet and Tweeted: “Perez Hilton called me douchebag so I had my homie shoot up a gay wedding. wasnt his but still made me feel better." Later, he tweeted again to Hilton: “stop being so sensitive its a joke. Your being a big baby.”
GLAAD spokesman, Rich Ferraro, decried 50 Cent’s outburst via press release.
“It’s wrong to make jokes and promote violence against the gay community.... Taking down the post is not enough. We wanted him to tell his Twitter followers that what he did was wrong,” said Ferraro.
In the age of instant news, 50 Cent’s rant was no doubt read and circulated by a gaggle of loyal followers. The reality is that celebrity-status brings the power of the press along with it.
It also seems that this isn’t Fitty’s first brush with public displays of gay-bashing. According to the New York Post, in a 2004 interview the rapper said, "I ain't into faggots. I don't like gay people around me, because I'm not comfortable with what their thoughts are.”
Note to 50 Cent: Celebs need to brush their shoulders off when insulted by Mr. Hilton. The man runs a celebrity gossip blog. Insulting the rich and famous is what he does. Bottom line? Bigotry is bigotry. And you're a homophobe.
