"Case 39"

Movie Trailer Review

By our guest blogger, Jeremy Wilkinson

From the writer that brought you the sparingly entertaining "Crazies" remake, comes the latest attempt at making you never want to have children--"Case 39."

The premise itself is simple enough. Renee Zellwegger plays a social worker named Emily whose thirty-ninth case involves a young girl (Jodelle Ferland) seemingly abused by her parents. After taking the girl from her home, Emily brings the girl back to her own house, thinking it’s a stable environment. But things seem to take a turn for the worse as the trailer reveals the girl’s parents barricade themselves in their own room at night, and that whatever it was that haunted the previous home has followed the girl to Emily’s.

It is not an altogether uninteresting idea. Things like it have been done before, but the trailer shows off a few shots with "Silent Hill"-esque creations that could be real crowd pleasers.

The major variables here are Renee Zellwegger and her co-star Bradley Cooper. While both can clearly take center stage in a film, this reviewer has yet to see evidence either one could carry a horror flick to its end. Ferland has proven herself in similar roles before, so her place in the movie seems natural.

"Case 39" could very well be a sleeper hit with some interesting twists or monsters. It looks interesting enough to warrant keeping an eye on, even if it doesn’t end up being a big hit with a wide audience.

"Case 39" opens in theaters October 1, 2010.  Below is the trailer.  What are your thoughts?
