“The King’s Speech” Reigns Over British Indie Awards

With the year drawing to a close and the major studios beginning the annual process of Oscar promotion, everyone in the film community is speculating on which pictures will take home which awards when the big night rolls around. Well, if the British Independent Film Awards are any indication, it looks as though “The King’s Speech” will be a major contender.

The film, which stars Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham-Carter, has been generating Oscar buzz ever since the critics hailed it as one of the best films of the year. Deadline reports that it recently won five British Independent Film Awards in the categories of Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Actor, Best Screenplay and Best Director.

Of course, that’s not to say that movie will sweep the Oscars. The Academy looks at a wider variety of films and there’s a lot of competition this year for any picture looking to take home the top prize.

“The King’s Speech” has a fair chance, though. It’s a period film, based on a true story, which is always a plus. Colin Firth has been a big star among fans of charming British romantic comedies, but the critical audience has begun to grow fond of him as well in recent years. Geoffrey Rush has been cultivating greater widespread recognition since his appearance in the first “Pirates of the Caribbean” films, and Helena Bonham-Carter is usually praise-worthy. With that degree of acting talent, a strong script, and guaranteed nominations in the Best Costume Design and Best Set Design categories (the Academy loves giving those awards to movies that take place in the past), “The King’s Speech” will definitely stand out in the crowd.
