Seth Meyers Hired for White House Correspondents Dinner

The White House Correspondents Dinner, which has previously booked such talented comedians as Stephen Colbert and such untalented comedians as Jay Leno, has recruited “Saturday Night Live” writer Seth Meyers to headline the 2011 dinner, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Meyers has been writing for “SNL” for 10 years and serves as anchor for the Weekend Update segment of the show, a faux news report sketch that often explores current political issues. Although popular TV comedians have been slightly less critical of President Obama than they were of Bush, we can still expect that Meyers will be looking to get some laughs at the President’s expense.

Although the dinner has been an annual event for years featuring such well-known hosts as Conan O’Brien and Jon Stewart, it gained much wider exposure in 2006, when Stephen Colbert sarcastically and relentlessly mocked President Bush while audience members tried to suppress their laughs. The video of the event became an internet phenomenon, attracting the attention of the media and everyday citizens.

It’s doubtful that Meyers’ performance will be as memorable, but he is a talented comedian and even if none of your friends send you the video in an e-mail, it’s likely that it will still be worth seeking out on your own.

He might not rock the house like Stephen Colbert, but I bet he could sneak in quite a few snarky jabs.
