Anthony Hopkins to Play Alfred Hitchcock?

Movie News

One of the scariest actors of all time may end up portraying one of the scariest directors of all time. Cinematical reports that although there is already one Alfred Hitchcock biopic in the works, starring Ben Kingsley and Emily Mortimer, director Sacha Gervasi and screenwriter John McLoughlin (who recently penned the superb “Black Swan”) may be at work on another take on the famous director’s life. Word is, Anthony Hopkins would like to take on the main role.

The film would focus on the making of “Psycho” and the relationship that Hitchcock had with his wife. Those interested in seeing whether there’s enough story there to make it into a dramatic and compelling movie should check out the biography “Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho,” upon which this film will be based.

Anthony Hopkins certainly has the acting chops to pull off this part, though we wonder whether audiences will find him believable regardless. Hitchcock was an icon, and Hopkins, thanks to his recurring role as Hannibal Lecter, is also something of an icon; will audiences be able to divorce him from the preconceived notions they already have about him? Especially since Hopkins tends to be grave and gloomy, whereas Hitchcock often came off as an enthusiastic yet respected gentleman with something of a goofy streak in him.

Either way, film lovers should be thrilled to know that the master of suspense may now be the focus of two major biopics. And honestly, if Hopkins could pull this off, it might mean another Oscar for him.
