“Charlie’s Angels” Gets Annie Ilonzeh

Movie News

Apparently, what the world needs now is another reboot. At least, that’s what ABC seems to think. The classic TV series “Charlie’s Angels”—which already got the reboot treatment via a film starring Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu—is being updated for modern audiences. Hmm…maybe “Hawaii Five-O” is actually doing better than we thought.

The first performer to be cast as one of the Angels is Annie Ilonzeh, Deadline reports. Having previously appeared on “General Hospital,” Ilonzeh isn’t quite a superstar, but shows like this one tend to cast lesser known actors, anyway.

Fans of the original series may breathe a sigh of relief upon learning that this show, while based around the same premise as its source material, won’t feature the same characters. It will still be “three badass babes battle bad guy for their boss,” but they won’t be the old badass babes that viewers are used to.

Ilonzeh’s character is named Kate, and from what we hear, she’s the “serious” member of the group. After being on “general Hospital” for a while, we’re sure Ilonzeh can handle “serious” just fine.

Will the show find an audience? That remains to be seen. We’d much prefer that studios focus their time developing new projects—ABC gambled on “Lost,” and it paid off—but we’re living in an age where executives tend to be shameless when it comes to rehashing material we’ve already seen before. It’s the way of the entertainment world, sadly, and as long as these reboots and remakes earn some money, we’ll keep getting them.

That’s not to say that the whole concept of taking a new and unique approach to a story is always a bad thing. Take a classic play like “Hamlet”: who knows how many times it’s been adapted for the screen. And yet, we’re always interested to see different takes on it.

It’s just, well…”Charlie’s Angels” ain’t “Hamlet.”
