“The Green Hornet” Grabs Top Spot at Weekend Box Office

Movie News

While the prospect of a superhero movie starring Seth Rogen seems pretty implausible on paper, in practice, it looks like the kind of unlikely formula that attracts audiences to theaters. At least, that’s the impression we get from the past weekend’s box office charts, which show new release “The Green Hornet” taking the top spot with a total weekend gross of $34 million. Not too shabby, especially considering the film is basically a hip update of a character that many of today’s young moviegoers will have never even heard of.

Another new release, Ron Howard’s “The Dilemma,” came in at number two, earning close to $17.5 million. With popular star Vince Vaughn in the lead and Kevin James attracting loyal “King of Queens” fans, it’s no big surprise that this fared well.

“True Grit," which had finally taken the top spot from the abominable “Little Fockers” last week, dropped to number three, but that’s to be expected. It’s been in theaters for a long time and unless both “The Dilemma” and “The Green Hornet” were “Gigli”-sized cinematic disasters, they were bound to kick the Coen brothers down a couple of notches.

We’re also happy to report that “Little Fockers” dropped all the way down to the six spot, with both “The King’s Speech” and “Black Swan” doing better. Could the buzz of the Golden Globe Awards have caused audiences to seek out more praise-worthy movies? Who knows. We’re just glad they’re getting the attention.
