New Sacha Baron Cohen Movie Gets 2012 Release Date

After the comedy phenomenon that was “Borat” and the less-successful but still pretty entertaining “Bruno,” Sacha Baron Cohen has transformed from cult icon to household name. While he’s been working towards establishing himself as a legitimate actor, appearing in the new Scorsese film “Hugo Cabret” and at one point considered for a role in Spielberg’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7” (a project the director eventually scrapped), his roots are in humor, and we’re happy to hear that he’ll be returning to what he does best with a new film being released next year.

Deadline reports that the comedy is called “The Dictator” and will tell the story of an oppressive ruler who strives to keep democracy out of his country. That doesn’t exactly sound like a laugh-marathon, but we’re pretty sure that Cohen can make it funny. It doesn’t hurt that he’s reuniting with “Borat” director Larry Charles, and that the film is penned by two former writers for “Seinfeld.”

No word yet on whether or not the film will be made in the faux-documentary style that the actor’s previous comedy films have been filmed in, but maybe it’s best that he avoid going that route again. Like Shyamalan and his twists, that could become his gimmick if he relies on it too heavily.

Either way, we’ll be seeing this; we’re just sad we’ll have to wait so long. The movie won’t be released until May 11, 2012.
