“The Social Network” Heads Back to Theaters

Movie News

By our guest blogger, Joe Oliveto

As is often the case with major Oscar contenders, David Fincher’s “The Social Network” will be heading back to theaters on January 7, with the Blu Ray and DVD of the film being released the upcoming Tuesday, Deadline reports. This decision came after the film earned the top honors on several critics’ lists of the best films of the year. It already got some of the most coveted awards—Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Jesse Eisenberg) and Best Screenplay—from the National Board of Review, and it has scored six Golden Globe nominations.

Academy Award nominations haven’t been announced yet, but the film is guaranteed to get a nod for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Picture and Best Director. We can also safely assume that a Best Actor nomination is on its way (though Jesse Eisenberg may have a tough time competing with Colin Firth), and a Best Supporting Actor nod for Justin Timberlake isn’t out of the question (never imagined I’d write that sentence).

Hey, maybe it’ll even get a Best Original Score nod, though that seems less likely.

This re-release is sure to keep the film in Academy voters minds, and will probably pick up some extra cash for the studio.

We have to remember that when word first got out that David Fincher was making a film about Facebook, most people were skeptical. Even after the main trailed debuted this summer, there were viewers who didn’t take the film seriously.

Now it’s the most acclaimed film of the year and has been recognized as a movie that will define a generation. If you haven’t yet had the opportunity to see it on the big screen, make sure you check it out now while you still can. Whether it takes home any major awards come Oscars night, it is not to be missed.
