Tiësto vs. Diplo ft. Busta Rhymes - C'mon (Catch 'Em By Surprise)

Video Music Review

In my head, I know better. I know that Busta Rhymes is so far from relevance now, it's not even funny. But you know what? Busta Rhymes' addition to the Tiësto/Diplo battle "C'mon (Catch 'Em By Surprise)" is beyond guilty pleasure level--it's a full on addiction.

Even though he sort of sounds like Sir Mix-a-Lot on this clip and the videos makes it seem like he's trapped in that orgy scene from the second "Matrix," but with the addition of a Street Fighter outcast fighting a cobra (no, seriously), "C'mon" is nonstop fun. Tiësto and Diplo are, of course, a match made in electro heaven and one wonders if the two will collaborate again on the forthcoming Major Lazer album but the real draw here is Busta Rhymes, who sounds more energized than he has in nearly a decade, back when he was guesting on De La Soul's Art Official Intelligence.

Maybe it's because Busta's got the spotlight to himself instead of this being a cameo on an already busy verse or maybe it's that "C'mon" isn't a normal Busta track, dominated as it is by electro house textures and Diplo's signature analog noodling. More hip-hop artists are gravitating towards electronic music than they arguably have since the days of Afrika Bambaataa and his Soul Sonic Force's "Planet Rock" and I'm of the opinion that this is a perfect partnership in general.

Because when you get down to it, electronic music and hip-hop have quite likely been the most adventurous, forward-thinking music of the past thirty years or so. This isn't to undersell rock but you have to admit that the advancements in that genre have been few and far between. And how often is forward thinking music as fun to dance to as "C'mon" is? Sir Mix-a-Lot similarities be damned.
