Deadline reported over the weekend that Cobie Smulders, of "How I Met Your Mother" fame, was the favorite to take on the role of Maria Hill in the upcoming Avengers film and now Variety has confirmed that she's gotten the role. In the source material, Maria Hill is a top level S.H.I.E.L.D. operative who works alongside Nick Fury, played by Samuel L. Jackson in the Iron Man franchise. At one point in the comics, after Fury has been caught meddling in international affairs, Hill even replaces Fury as the head of S.H.I.E.L.D.

In a recent interview on Jimmy Fallon, Jackson broke the news that there were at least five actresses vying for the role of his "sidekick." Smulders has come out ahead and it's likely due to the fact that she was once cited by Avengers director Joss Whedon as his top choice for the Wonder Woman film he was previously attached to. While details are still slim, it's quite possible that Hill could be both hero and antagonist in the film since in the comics she's well known as an adversary to the hero community.

Smulders joins an all-star cast that includes Robert Downey Jr. reprising his Iron Man role, Scarlett Johansson returning as the Black Widow from Iron Man 2, Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans as Thor and Captain America respectively, roles which they're soon to debut in separate films, and Mark Ruffalo and Jeremy Renner making their first appearances as the Hulk and Hawkeye. All of the actors are said to have signed on for multiple appearances as their characters across a wide spectrum of films, which will likely include further Avengers entries.
