Joaquin Phoenix for “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Slayer”?
Movie News

After a brief stint in la-la-land with the mockumentary “I’m Still Here,” fans were wondering whether Joaquin Phoenix, who’d been a rising star with considerable talent, would return to the acting game. (Although it is a little disappointing that his faux-rapping career never spawned any actual albums.)
Luckily, Deadline reports that Pheonix may now be in talks to appear in “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Slayer,” an adaptation of the novel of the same name. With Benjamin Walker more or less set to play the titular role, Phoenix would likely take on the part of Henry, a supernatural character who transforms one of America’s most famous presidents into a hunter of the undead.
Not quite the Lincoln film that Spielberg has planned.
While it’s fair to say that vampires have overrun pop culture these days, this sounds like the kind of good-old-fashioned horror flick that some fans could really get behind. While we doubt that it will give us a genuine history lesson, “Inglourious Basterds” was fairly close to pure fantasy as well, but it succeeded by virtue of being an amazingly fun film. With Edward Cullen still brooding because he sparkles in the sun, we’ll be happy to know that there’s at least one vampire movie out there which boyfriends will drag their girlfriends to see, and not the other way around.
Phoenix’s involvement remains unconfirmed, but this sounds like it could be a good role for him. We’ve seen him prove his dramatic acting chops already; now we’d like to see him have some fun.
Maybe that’s what he was doing with “I’m Still Here,” but no one saw that.
