According to Deadline, Tupac Shakur could be the next in a long line of legendary musicians to get the Hollywood biopic treatment. Morgan Creek has given the green-light to producers to move forward with the project after receiving the blessing of Shakur’s mother.

Although he lived a tragically short life, Tupac Shakur made a lasting impact on the world of hip-hop music. He is remembered for providing a voice of social consciousness that urged listeners to embrace peace. He allowed the silent lower-class to be heard.

However, his career was not without controversy, and it is going to be difficult for filmmakers to create an accurate and sensitive movie about his life. Although it is widely known that Shakur was involved in the East-coast/West-coat rap feud, he was also accused of sexual assault, and although he denied these charges, viewers might wonder whether or not and to what degree such issues will be addressed in the film.

There also remains speculation regarding who was involved in Tupac’s shooting. Various individuals—friends, associates, police officers, independent investigators—have all proposed different theories. Hollywood has a tendency to latch on to one myth and depict it as truth; hopefully those involved with this film can remain fairly neutral on this issue.

Tupac’s legacy continues to live on in the world of hip-hop (and popular music in general), and there will be many fans looking forward to seeing his life depicted on film. However, as production on this film begins, it will probably generate some controversy. We look forward to seeing how it turns out.
