Various Actors Being Considered for "Bourne" Spinoff

It seems impossible to imagine anyone other than Matt Damon as the protagonist in a “Bourne” movie, but with former director Paul Greengrass off the franchise, it looks as though Damon is done with the character as well. However, Hollywood can never let a good/profitable (in this case they’re the same thing) series die, so a spinoff is in the works with Tony Gilroy, who penned previous installments, stepping in as director.

Although the project is far away from production, Deadline does have a list of actors who are in consideration for the role. Some of them make sense. Michael Fassbender was mentioned, and between turning in a memorable performance in “Inglourious Basterds” and taking on the role of Magneto in the upcoming “X-Men: First Class,” it would be a great role for the rising star. A “Bourne” hero has to be energetic but subtle; he doesn’t wise crack the way old-school Bond does. Fassbender has the right vibe to pull that off.

Michael Pitt, who has shown us his skill on HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire,” was also mentioned, along with Jake Gyllenhaal.

Some of the names mentioned don’t make a whole lot of sense, though. Tobey Maguire? He did fine as Spider-Man, but that’s a character who is supposed to be a little goofy. Paul Dano? Does he even star in movies with a budget? He’s certainly skilled, but he does not seem like a “Bourne” star.

Whoever gets the role could be in for a long ride. There’s no guarantee this franchise can work without Damon, but Tony Gilroy is a skilled director who may be able to tell a strong and engaging story that spawns even more sequels. We’ll have to wait and see.
