Britney Spears "Till the End of the World"

Music Video Review

By our guest blogger, Nick Hanover

I may be wrong, but I think Britney Spears' newest video is trying to warn all of us that Britney is going to bring about the end of the world.

For one, it's right there in the title. Further proof is found in the extreme coincidence of Britney organizing some kind of sleazy orgy in the city's subway system just in time for some kind of freak meteorological event that just so happens to be perfectly synced up to her awkward dance moves. Is someone from within Spears' camp responsible for this warning? Or is Spears so cocky about her power over us that she feels confident she can display our fate without any of us being able to do a damn thing about it?

My instinct says it's the latter.

Admittedly that could be because Spears spends half her time in the video switching out various S&M outfits while flouting her goods in front of a wall made of her own platinum records as everyone else stands by--terrified. Like the demented offspring of Last Night, Road Warrior and that underground rave/swinger party scene from that one Matrix sequel, "Till the End of the World" is all about the decadence an apocalypse would bring. Because Spears clearly needs an excuse on the level of the destruction of the entire planet to be scandalous and scantily clad.

Nonetheless, "Till the World Ends" is an improvement over Spears' last effort, which managed to cram in a terrible reference to online dating and remind everyone that Spears was once something other than a laughing stock through its strategic use of archival footage of the pop tartlet. The weird thing? That video also had a reference to a freak meteorological event. Prophecy? Threat? Considering how screwed up reality already is, wouldn't it just be that much more fitting to have Spears wind up as the savior of all mankind thanks to her heretofore unknown Nostradamus-like abilities?

Just saying, title's "Till the World Ends," not "Till the End of the World."
