Hailee Steinfeld for “Sleeping Beauty”?

Movie News

Hailee Steinfeld may not have scored the coveted lead role in “The Hunger Games,” but given her memorable turn in last year’s “True Grit,” we’re not too concerned about the future of her acting career, especially now that Deadline reports that the young star may be attached to the spec script “Sleeping Beauty,” a new take on the classic fairy tale.

While some may scoff at the idea of revisiting this story, it should be known that the new version, penned by Lindsay Devlin, strays substantially from the source material. Whereas previous incarnations of the title character were fairly passive—she is sleeping, after all—this one will actually follow her into the world of her dreams.

In the wake of “Inception,” another film about dreams, we wouldn’t be surprised if a studio snatches this one up as quickly as possible. Sure, we doubt that the two films will actually have all that much in common, but it does seem as though movie producers are willing to go ga-ga over any property that is even vaguely similar to something that was recently successful. Then again, with Steinfeld potentially set in the lead role, we could see this one actually being a major success.

Either way, for Steinfeld’s sake, we hope that it works out. In “True Grit,’ she showed audiences that she’s that rare teen star who doesn’t rely solely on good looks to get ahead. She displayed a good deal of spunk and charm in that film, and we want to see what else she can do.
