“Grown Ups” Movie Trailer Review

By our guest blogger, Spencer Morton

About 95 percent of Happy Madison productions have been complete garbage. “Grown Ups” is the production company’s first 2010 release and, from early previews, it looks pretty childish. The trailer is devoid of many laughs and there doesn’t seem to be any point to the movie. The funniest thing about the trailer is the irony of the title “Grown Ups,” and how it could hardly be used to describe any of the lead actors.

Lenny (Adam Sandler), Kurt (Chris Rock), Eric (Kevin James), Rob (Rob Schneider) and Marcus (David Spade) were best friends growing up. Since their childhood days, they’ve gone their separate ways. Now "grown up," the five friends decide to reunite, meet each other’s families, and spend the 4th of July weekend at a cabin on the lake.

There seemingly isn’t much plot other than that. I guess funny things are supposed to happen, but that seems unlikely. Each actor has loads of comedic talent, but nothing clicks, at least in the trailer. Everything about the “Grown Ups” trailer is bland, uninteresting and pointless. The film looks like an unfunny version of “The Great Outdoors.”

That said, the rope swing scene in the trailer is pretty funny. There undoubtedly will be some minor laughs here and there, but the writing will be a huge obstacle for these funnymen to overcome. Sandler never has been much of a writer. Some of his earlier material was great, but lately, it’s been atrocious.

Check out the trailer and let us know what you think. Does this film have a chance to deliver consistent laughs or will it be another addition to the dumpster that is Happy Madison Productions? “Grown Ups” is set for release on June 25, 2010.
