"Randomocity" Movie Trailer Review

"Randomocity" is the independent debut of Tyler Lee Allen, who writes, directs and stars as protagonist Ashley. Ashley is depressed. Based on the trailer you don't really understand why, but he is. He has a girlfriend named Angela. The film follows the couple as they cope following an awful crime.

You can tell from the trailer that this is an independent film. The look is pretty dull and sloppy, even by indie standards (for comparison, look at something like "Half Nelson"). Not that that's a problem. Movies like "Clerks" look pretty bad but the material within completely transcends the aesthetics.

The thing is, nothing within the trailer suggests anything interesting or new. The acting seems sub-par, the direction looks simplistic (how many times am I going to have to see the static shot of a person sitting on a couch staring into oblivion before indie directors realize once was enough?), and the plot sounds boring at best.

All of that said, it's hard not to feel a certain connection with Tyler Lee Allen and other indie filmmakers as someone who also wants to be a filmmaker someday. It's always great to see someone putting themselves out there and putting work into what they love (I especially admire those like Allen who manage to write, direct, and act). Plus, it was filmed in Ohio, and as an Ohioan, I've got to give him some respect for that.

"Randomocity" doesn't seem to have a specific release date on IMDb, but it's set for release sometime in 2010.
