"The Back-Up Plan" Movie Trailer Review

It's been a good while since Jennifer Lopez was in the spotlight (at least positively). The whole Bennifer fiasco thing back in 2005/2006 (mostly involving their critical and financial disaster "Gigli") left her and former hubby Ben Affleck in the dust. Affleck was able to make a decent comeback as of late with his directorial debut "Gone Baby Gone" and decent exposure in "State of Play."

Perhaps it's time for J.Lo to do the same. But will "The Back-Up Plan," her upcoming pregnancy romantic comedy, do it for her? Not by the looks of it.

As always, I should put a disclaimer here that "The Back-Up Plan" and other films like it simply are not aimed at my demographic. If you're a fan of romantic comedies, this very well may be a film for you. Lopez plays a woman who is desperate to have a child and decides to do so through artificial insemination. Directly after discovering she's pregnant, however, she meets the man of her dreams, and chaos ensues as she attempts to hide it from him until they know each other well enough.

The trailer makes it look pretty typical, pretty much like a more estrogen-infused "Knocked Up." I'm no fan of Jennifer Lopez--the sort of tough but sweet persona she maintains in most of her films doesn't really appeal to me much, despite her generally adequate performances. I'm not familiar with director Alan Poul, but based on his previous filmography (the horror film "Candyman" and critically acclaimed TV show "Six Feet Under"), he seems kind of out of place here.

But like I said, it all depends on your general opinion on romantic comedies. If you love them, you'll probably want to check this one out. If you're anything like me, this'll be an easy pass.

"The Back-Up Plan" will be released April 16, 2010.
