Music Video Review: Eels' “End Times"

The ever hip band, Eels, have recently released a new single entitled “End Times.” While this depressing little song is outshined by an artistically exciting video, as a whole the two create a unique piece of art that should be checked out.

“End Times” uses a mix of paintings, 2D stop motion, and movements that look as if they come straight out of a child’s picture book. The dark colors and sleepy night time feel go well with the song’s message. Although some of the lyrics are shown a bit too literally, this fault does not detract from the piece of work as whole. The Eels are known for their sometimes off-beat lyrics (think “I Like Birds”) and the ones they chose to literally portray fit perfectly within their repertoire. This video is definitely an artistic achievement for the group. The way they chose to visually portray “End Times” is not only nicely constructed but actually makes up for kind of a sub-par song.

Every once in a while a group comes out with a song that’s not bad necessarily, but it’s just kind of boring--that’s what “End Times” is.  For established fans, this song most likely will be a minor footnote in their long and diverse career. Meanwhile, those who haven’t listened to the Eels, start with “Daisys of the Galaxy” instead.

Grade: B+
