Movie Trailer Review

Solomon Kane

By our guest blogger, Spencer Morton

Robert E. Howard, author and creator of "Conan the Barbarian," was known for his gloomy, dark characters. Solomon Kane was arguably his darkest. There were only a handful of Kane stories published by Howard in the 1920s and '30s. Marvel Comics, in attempts to reinvent the character, published a few issues in the '70s and '80s. Only now, in 2010, is there a film adaptation, and the trailer looks impressive.

The premise is intriguing. Kane is a cold-blooded mercenary. He’s a born killer who wouldn’t think twice before dismembering an enemy. A demon, the Devil’s Reaper, looms over Kane and drags him to hell, where his soul shall be damned for all the killing he’s done. However, if Kane vows to never kill again, he can save himself from eternal damnation.

While living a life a peace and harmony, an evil sorcerer begins wreaking havoc upon his homeland. There’s only one thing Kane can do…kill again. Some will think this premise is a bit silly, but others, myself included, will think it’s pretty cool.

The trailer is stylish and fun, yet fairly derivative. Even from the trailer, we can clearly see its biggest influence is “The Lord of the Rings Trilogy.” The trailer makes the film seem, dare I say, epic. The score, dialogue and action sequences are all really well put together. The film already has gained a limited release internationally and the reviews have been splendid.

Until this point, “Solomon Kane” hasn’t really been marketed at all. Michael J. Bassett is a pretty unknown director and the star is semi-famous James Purefoy. Without any huge names attached, it’s easy to see why this one might go overlooked. It doesn’t have a U.S. release date yet. For now, enjoy the trailer. The writers of “Solomon Kane” are hoping to make this film the first of three installments. Perhaps this will be an unexpected, fun little saga.
