Movie Trailer Review

"The Backup Plan"

By our guest blogger, Joel Crabtree

In "The Backup Plan," Jennifer Lopez looks to be returning to the big screen with the type of movie that made her famous — a lame romantic comedy. She's the queen of the genre, and that's not a good thing.

Lopez plays Zoe, and she's a working girl who's too busy to find true love. Sound familiar? Then you know where this is going.

Zoe wants children, and her lack of a partner forces her to turn to the backup plan — artificial insemination. Just as she gets the procedure done, she DOES find true love! It comes in the form of Alex O'Laughlin's Stan, who takes the role usually reserved for Matthew McConaughey.

"The Backup Plan" trailer opens with Eric Christian Olsen doing a spit take (I didn't know those existed outside of "Saved by the Bell"). Olsen, who is usually a very funny character actor, is above this material, even after "Fired Up!"

The trailer only gets worse from there. The humor and chemistry just seem so forced. Lopez is thrown into a series of awkward scenarios that lack originality. In the trailer, it doesn't seem like anybody gives a damn about the material, and why should they? We've seen this movie too many times before, and "The Backup Plan" certainly won't be the last of its kind.

There's a good movie to be made using the premise of artificial insemination. In fact, it's already been made. It's called "Baby Mama," and it doesn't look like Lopez's "Backup Plan" is even in the same league as Tina Fey's witty take on the subject.
