"Needle" Movie Trailer Review
"Needle"
By our guest blogger, Jeremy Wilkinson
After watching the trailer for "Needle," one word comes to mind--possibility. It’s clearly low budget, and will have its flaws, but "Needle" could end up being a minor hit among the gorehound crowd.
College student Ben Rutherford inherits a machine called “La Vaudou Mort” from his father. He shows the device to his friends, and they can’t seem to quite figure it out. During a voice-over, someone claims it’s a machine that harnesses the power of voodoo to gain revenge. Soon, a mysterious person decides to take revenge on the teens. No indication of why someone would try and take revenge against the friends. Maybe whoever it is was teased or kicked out of a frat or something.
"Needle" is not particularly arresting, and the characters don’t pop out as especially interesting in the trailer. Not much background is given, and we’re really not sure whether we should sympathize with the victims or not. Instead of focusing on silly things like introducing compelling characters or an interesting plot, the kills take center stage. Based on the trailer, it’s clear what will make or break "Needle" will be the use of murder. If it can pull off some creative kills, the film could find its own niche in a market saturated by independent horror that is often unsatisfying.
This film will not find wide acceptance. Most likely, it will fall flat on multiple levels. But if it can pull off the kills, "Needle" could turn out to be a fun afternoon-with-the-friends movie. If you like blood and gore, check back on the movie when it’s released. It could end up poking the right nerves.
"Needle" opens May 6, 2010.
