"Saw 3D"

Movie Trailer Review

By our guest blogger, Anthony Crabtree

It’s a bit of a cliché to say, but another year, another film from the “Saw” franchise. Each successive film gets more and more ridiculous and this one aims to put them all to shame as this one is actually in 3D. Now I must confess that I have actually come to enjoy the “Saw” films for what they are. They are ridiculous, and for their spirit and effort, I applaud the filmmakers.

My tastes aside, the trailer for the latest film in the franchise, simply titled “Saw 3D,” states that it will be the final “Saw.” This is awkward, because I thought the last film was promoted as such. With that said, anyone familiar with the series will not be surprised at all by what hits the screen. Viewers get glimpses of torturous devices, quick cuts of people screaming, and the voice of Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) spouting words of “wisdom.” There really is no meat to this trailer or reason to view it. It was made to announce that there is still a new "Saw" film coming out in October, and it will be in 3D.

Some of the things that fans of the series were probably hoping to get a glimpse of are sadly not present. Dr. Gordon (Cary Elwes) from the original is supposed to be making his return in this film, and when I first heard about this trailer, I was excited that he might be present. No luck. We are, however, treated to some characters from past films, but none of them really make an impression.

Like that matters though! It’s a “Saw” film. The dwindling, but loyal, fan base will see the film no matter what the teaser trailer looks like. The problem with this trailer is that I was looking for references to previous installments. Watching a film franchise grow over time should be a rewarding thing, as characters come and go, and references to each film are made. I saw little of that with this teaser trailer, and hopefully a full-length trailer will come out and whet my appetite before long.

Below is the trailer for "Saw 3D."  What are your thoughts?
