"Tangled"

Movie Trailer Review

By our guest blogger, Rob Stammitti

If the trailer for "Tangled" is indicative of anything, it's this--Disney is desperate. Really desperate.

Originally titled "Rapunzel" and supposedly aimed at the same audience as "The Princess and the Frog," "Tangled" recently has undergone a few major changes, as Disney feels that the $270 million they made on "Frog" just wasn't enough. So, here we have a new angle, here aimed at a young male audience, but I can't say this new campaign will do Disney much good. Really, it just comes off as forced.

I can't say for sure what the plot is. Most people know the general deal with Rapunzel, though. She has really long hair, she's trapped in a tower, and a prince comes and climbs up her hair to get into the tower and save her.

In Disney's version of this story (or at least what I've gleaned from the trailer--can't say for sure in the actual film), the prince takes the lead and instead of just saving Rapunzel they get in various adventures, but not before she thinks he's an intruder and attacks him with her hair. Any young boys out there sold yet? No? Yeah, I didn't expect so.

There's nothing wrong with Disney's "princess" line. "Frog" did very well, financially and critically, and plenty of people, little girl or not, enjoy films like "Beauty and the Beast," "Mulan," "Pocahontas," etc. But something just seems wrong about "Tangled," and it's because of the way they're selling it and not because of the film itself (after all, taglines like "It takes two to tangle" and "She's been grounded...like, forever" and the usage of some random Pink song aren't really indicative of the film, just the people selling it).

Other stuff, like the animation, voice acting, that kind of thing--it all seems fine. Judgment of the film itself is going to have to wait, as this trailer just can't be a real example of what this film is like. But if it is, Disney's really scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Rapunz...uh, "Tangled," yeah, "Tangled," will be released November 24, 2010. Trailer is below. Thoughts?
