"Burlesque"

Movie Trailer Review

By our guest blogger, Rob Stammitti

Are there people out there who have been waiting desperately for Christina Aguilera's film debut? Well, if there are, I guess "Burlesque" is what you've been waiting for.

Judging by the debut trailer, it looks to be a vague mix of Bob Fosse-type musicals, "Showgirls" and Christina Aguilera music videos, plus little tinges of the attitude and style of the Pussycat Dolls, who director Steve Antin helped put together.

The plot is pretty basic. Aguilera plays Ali, a struggling dancer (I'd really rather not use the cliched "small town girl," but that's what she is) who comes to L.A. to find work but who can only find a job as a waitress in an old-fashioned burlesque joint run by Tess (Cher) and her stage manager (Stanley Tucci, apparently the go-to guy for these kind of roles anymore). At first Tess is unsure of Ali's talents, but once she gets up on stage and busts out that powerful voice of her, an entire world full of possibilities for fame and fortune open up, as well as possible enemies in a fellow dancer, Nikki (Kristen Bell, looking sort of out of her element).

The film doesn't look to add much to the genre at all, outside of the novelty of one music legend working with a would-be one, but they could do worse, cast-wise, and with a script co-written by Diablo Cody there might be a bit of a personal touch and bit of humor thrown in.

"Burlesque" is set to be released for Thanksgiving, November 24, 2010. Trailer is below. Thoughts?
