Could there be anything more fascinating?

At this point, a lot of people have probably forgotten, or at least don't care, about Joaquin Phoenix's baffling appearance on Letterman last year, nor do they probably care too much that he allegedly quit acting to pursue a career in rap music. That said, those people might rethink their stance on the actor if and when they see "I'm Still Here."

Whether that new stance will be positive or negative is a different story.

The film, labelled a "documentary" but just as likely to be an Andy Kaufman-esque stunt--hard to say--details the past year in Phoenix's life. But it's obvious that the film isn't just some simple chronicle of a move from acting to rapping. The whole thing is very enigmatic and the trailer is just as enigmatic as the film itself.

Short but sweet, the trailer gives brief glimpses at moments in the film, all under a bit of bizarre dialogue from Edward James Olmos. We see Joaquin on stage, avoiding paparazzi, fighting in hotel rooms and with disgruntled fans, working in the studio with P. Diddy, and just be altogether weird looking. That beard you may have seen him with on Letterman? It hasn't gone anywhere--it's just gotten bigger, and he apparently hasn't combed his hair for the whole year he's been working.

Hoax or not, the film looks outrageously entertaining, and even if it all ends up being fake, it'll still be an interesting look at Phoenix's mindset (as well as that of Casey Affleck, Phoenix's brother-in-law and the film's director). And if it is a hoax, it's just about the boldest move from an actor of this caliber since, well, ever.

"I'm Still Here" receives a limited release on September 10, 2010 and opens wide September 17, 2010. Trailer is below. Thoughts?
