Lifetime To Make Craigslist Killer Biopic

Movie News

The revolution may not be televised, but it appears that the Craigslist Killer will be. According to Variety, a Lifetime film about the life and death of Philip Markoff is in the works.

The suburban nightmare of a privileged white-boy gone bad will certainly make for gripping television. Or at the very least elicit some morbid curiosity from viewers. Philip Markoff earned the moniker Craigslist Killer after the 22-year-old medical student was arrested for the murder of Julissa Brisman, a woman he met through the Erotic Services section of Craigslist.

The fascination with Markoff’s case must come in part from the shock that accompanies a tale of a golden boy with a dark side. Philip Markoff was a boy next door – blonde and good-looking with a beautiful fiancée to boot. When the story first broke, pictures of the once happy couple were plastered around the Internet as quickly as a Paris Hilton sex-tape.

In essence, as the Craigslist Killer story unfolded amid a media frenzy, stereotypical characters had already been cast. Markoff as the clean-cut good guy with an underbelly of dark sexual predilections and sociopathic impulses, fiancée McAllister as the duped, blonde innocent and Brisman as the girl who got involved in the stranger-danger world of the internet. With a story so tragically morbid, it seems almost natural that a Lifetime TV movie would follow.

The Lifetime feature will be directed by Stephen Kay and produced by Sony Pictures TV. Donald Martin and Stephen Tolkin have been charged with adapting the news story into a script. Talks about the film were in progress previous to Markoff’s August 15th suicide.
