It was only a matter of time before eating disorders entered the world of reality television. With a plethora of intervention and self-help based shows already on the air, it’s a wonder that it even took this long.
E! network’s fall line-up will include the show, "What’s Eating You?," a six-part documentary series profiling twelve individuals with disturbed eating behaviors. According to an E! press release, “From bizarre rituals to extreme habits, the worlds of the twelve brave participants will be an open book.” A range of disordered eating habits will be examined, from an emaciated, anorexic model to a woman who eats toilet paper rolls dipped in pickle juice every night.
"What’s Eating You?" is being produced by 3 Ball Productions, the media company that already produces weight-loss themed reality television shows, "The Biggest Loser" and "The Weight-Loss Project"
According to Lisa Berger, E! network executive VP, the new docu-series has a social purpose. "The prevalence of eating disorders is all too common in a society that can often value looks and appearance above all else,” says Berger.
One has to wonder whether the network recognizes the slight irony in airing a television show meant to promote body diversity and disordered eating awareness next to "The Girls Next Door,"" Fashion Police" and "Keeping Up with the Kardashians."
"What’s Eating You?" premieres October 10, 2010 at 10:00 pm on E!
Will you be skipping the DVR on this one--or watching with baited breath?
